In 2019 thousands of people concerned for the ecological state of planet Earth came together as the decentralised autonomous group XR (short for Extinction Rebellion). During the largest global protest of its kind to date, thousands of activists surrounded British Government in London by blocking every approaching road and occupying several bridges.
With over 30,000 activists from all walks of life and age groups, the action brought catapulted the climate/ecological crisis onto central stage by bringing the area around government office in London to a complete standstill.
During the action one of the most striking efforts was that of these two activists, who creatively managed to block a major road beside the famous Trafalgar Square.
The man pictured reading his book stayed on top of that trailer for two whole days in order to stop the police removing the block, which was very strategically placed.
These actions may seem strange, but are undeniably effective raising awareness at and creating change to address the most significant challenge in human history.
The gas mask and hourglass symbolically point to the hard reality facing many and a rapidly approaching future for all if we do not act now to avert this crisis. This is an issue that affects everybody yet is facilitated by a tiny few.
The simple message of this action: Stop the Destruction and Save Planet Earth.
